Carterton Indoor Pool update Dec 2024

Meri Kirihimete!

As this is the last update for the year, we’d like to take the opportunity to thank you for your support for the Carterton Indoor Pool Project throughout 2024!

It’s been a very busy year: fundraising; applying for grants; presenting to community groups and the councils; and working through the initial building design concept.

We finished off the year with some of the Project Team and their families taking part in the Carterton Christmas Parade. Although we wanted to primarily increase awareness of the project, we were stoked to win $100 for coming third in the non-business section. Thank you Rotary Club of Carterton! Every little helps!

Building update

Jason Markham is the Carterton Indoor Pool Project Building sub-committee lead. The committee has been working with an aquatic designer from CREATE.

To keep the project as economical as possible, the Team is currently engaged in a design-to-budget process with the designer. The cost of the concept design is being estimated by local contractors and suppliers to minimise design fees and help the Project Team manage the budget.

When ready, the building design will be shared with the public for open consultation.

●     The new building will have environmental controls costing about $900,000, which requires carefully coordinated mechanical, electrical and structural design work. Getting this right is a key focus for the team.

●     The Site will need a firewall on the boundary with a residential section, and solutions for connecting to the sewer, mains power and existing storm-water soakage are being investigated.

●     Design and construction choices made now will determine the long-term viability of the facility. TheTeam is aiming for a facility that is as functional and welcoming as possible at an achievable cost.

●     The pool is owned by charitable community group the Carterton Swimming Club and will most likely be transitioned to an asset-management-focused governance structure.

●     The project is extremely lucky to have a range of dedicated and diversely skilled volunteers. The enthusiastic support from the community, service clubs and building partners is inspiring and helps keep the team going. New volunteers to share the load are always welcome!
